‘Is that all there is” ; the famous Peggy Lee 1969 song asks. It continues by suggesting to bring out the booz and have a ball. One may wonder if that is the best answer to life’s quest.
The song however deals with a question many of us ask themselves. We all, at some points in life feel caught in a series of events of which we wonder whether this is the part we were intended to play.
I’ve just read a book, written by Bronnie Ware, titled ‘ The top 5 regrets of the dying’ . It is an autobiography based on the work the author used to do, living in support for people who for whatever reason needed support during a transition or were in their end-of-life phase.
Weaving her own life story through the narratives of the people she accompanied, Bronnie guides her readers through the 5 regrets she heard mentioned the most about what people wanted to do with their lives and didn’t
She could have left out the last two words as far as I’m concerned. In a way we all die a little every day; just as we all wonder a little every day whether or not we are on the right path. On Facebook or during party small talk, our words paint the pictures of success and how well we do in our chase for happiness and achievements, while in our hearts a whole different set of thoughts, feelings and wishes may be at play.
But how do you do that? How do you detach yourself from the every day demands? The path we feel obliged to follow, versus following the heart? How do we do what we really want to do?
Basically we are coping most of the time, rather than enjoying the moment. Surviving rather than living the life, using patterns and beliefsystems, that have been passed on to us through generations.
We live in a day and age however where the question of ‘is that all there is’ offers more scope than it ever did before. The age of Aquarius is a time of transition; of growing awareness, of more opportunity to detach from material goals only; of getting to know who we really are, what we really want, how we really feel. If our grandparents could be transported just for one day to this day and age; they’d be flabbergasted by what is possible and acceptable today. So there is light at the end of the tunnel and the new age answer to the question ‘is that all there is’ is “no, there is more between heaven and earth than meets the eye; and the new age answer to living the life you really want; is to live in the moment, and live it from the heart rather than the brain. It’s not about the marbles, its about the game. It’s not about the watch; it’s about how you spend the time.
